A view into the future and with X-rays through; cargo / freight inspection against climbers / stowaways / illegal lifters
Detect climbers / stowaways / illegal lifters without manual or passive inspection and without the driver having to leave his vehicle.
Vehicle and truck control is an important part of border security; both at international airports such as Schiphol, the harbors (Port of Rotterdam) and also at the borders. Freight control – whether with X-ray or manual inspection – often is a time-consuming security measure to prevent prohibited goods or illegal transport of people (also called climbers, stowaways or illegal lifters).
In March and June 2019, there was a significant increase in stowaways in the Port of Rotterdam. In 2018, no fewer than (!) 1371 climbers were detected and removed from trailers and containers. In 2017 that amount of stowaways only was 944; an extreme increase. The Police, Customs and security personel are facing these challenges every day. Fortunately, checking the above illegal practices can be much more cost efficient and faster!
The latest development in the field of X-ray freight inspection has proceeded with the introduction of the high energy HXP freight inspection scanner from Astrophysics. The X-ray technology scans an entire truck in just seconds; even allowing the driver to remain seated, without health risks for the driver.
As a result stowaways are immediately visible, which makes traditional security interventions potentially unnecessary in these truck and container investigations. An additional advantage is improving safety, because illegal people are stopped which benefits the economy by tackling threats directly at the source.
Regular inspection with dogs is not enough these days. In addition, dogs get tired after a while and it also offers no continuity. Patrolling with a team of multiple inspectors is expensive. Summarized, both prevention measures do not offer a 100% guarantee against stopping illegal “lifters” and potentially threatening situations.
HXP: “It takes seconds to scan a truck but can take hours to search one,” says Astrophysics.Compete with the major European ports – a technological lead offers significant opportunities
Recent years the number four of the world’s largest ports in the world – the Port of Rotterdam – has been facing fiercer competition from the ports of Antwerp and Hamburg. To further promote the container transport that transfers to and from lorries, faster and more cost-efficient freight and container inspection is essential.
